I love to journal.
I take sermon notes, I pray for family and friends (enemies too) I write and interpret dreams, I doodle, I communicate with God, I take notes on books I love and I use it as a mechanism to spark creativity for training. I also take the time to brainstorm certain exercises that promote intellectual growth, stimulate wisdom, channel self-refection and ultimately draw me closer to God. Here is an example of a recent exercise I put myself through for one week. I highly recommend it.
Getting a little personal
One thing I liked: I enjoyed watching my trainee Jenny train with a 30 pounds sandbag. Jenny has lost 30 lbs. since she has started training with me. The symbolism of her carrying, throwing and lifting her own body weight she took off in exactly ONE YEAR is quite mesmerizing. I think she’s a little stunned too.
One thing I loved: My husband was busy with homework. He knew he couldn’t go to bed with me because he had to stay up late studying. So, he took ten minutes to come cuddle with me and speak words of love and encouragement. He says (and I quote), “This is the best part of my whole day.” He melts my heart.
One thing I learned: A refresher on worldview concepts. I re-read parts of a book called“Naming the Elephant” by James W. Sire. I will be doing a short sermon on worldview for Prayer Pilates class on Friday. I am thankful I have always been a diligent highlighter.
One thing that surprised me: Watching Anthony Bordain’s “Parts Unknown.” I’m always learning something new from this show. Tonight’s country: Lebanon. Specifically the city of Beirut. I had no idea there was so many Syrian refuges there. I mean, it makes sense; it’s right next-door. It’s been fascinating to see all of the religions and ethnicities that live among each other in a country the size of Connecticut.
One thing I repent: Swearing and losing my mind in traffic. Unfortunately I was on the phone with Paul when it happened. He wasn’t too impressed with my colorful language and 0 to 60 changes in behavior. Temperance Courtney. Temperance.
One thing I liked: Taking our first road trip in our new truck! Where to: My cabin!
One thing I loved: Being with my dad.
One thing I learned: Stuff about Rocky Balboa. I honestly don’t really care. They guys were watching a guy movie while I made food.
One thing that surprised me: How bright the stars were. Paul and I took a moment to hold hands and thank God for his unrelenting beauty and omnipotent. It’s moments like this that make me feel so small and remind me of where I will be going one day. It was magical.
One thing I repent: Complaining.
One thing I liked: My sweet potato egg bake. It’s our first official Haseltine secret recipe!
One thing I loved: My papa kissing me on the forehead while I was asleep on the couch.
One thing I learned: Beyoncé was cheated on! #Lemonade Boy is she PISSED. #Sheaintsorry
One thing that surprised me: A falling tree almost hit Paul.
One thing I repent: Complaining. Again… UH! IT’s my sickness. In my defense I was hangry. I never know what words will fly out of my mouth when I’m hangry.
One thing I liked: BIG cup of coffee. Sleeping in. Devotions. I guess that’s three things. They are all equally important so I obviously couldn’t pick just one.
One thing I loved: Going on a long run with Paul. The temperature was just right. We found a new running trail and Paul really pushed me on my running. He runs a lot faster than me and it’s always a challenge. I need that!
One thing that surprised me: Someone I am VERY close with is pregnant. I cried at dinner. Then I came home and cried more. I said to Paul, “It all just so sad.” He laughs and responds, “Why? Why aren’t you happy?” “I am…it’s just now I have to really grow up if she’s all grown up. And nothing can ever happen to that baby. The world is so dark, and I just couldn’t imagine…” And on and on I go. Mind you, Paul is still laughing hysterically as I am having a very serious moment. Can you say DRAMATIZE MUCH?
One thing I repent: Ok, third time is a charm: Complaining again. This is why I am doing this exercise. It’s making me realize where I need some accountability with growth in my faith and communication with my husband. And I’m not lying… I was hangry again! I really need to keep protein bars in my purse.
One thing I liked: A very busy day with clients. It sure makes the day go by fast.
One thing I loved: Hanging out with my evening Stretch Class. The guys in there are so fun…and inappropriate…
One thing I learned: New foam rolling techniques. I have been able to help a few clients along with myself. WIN!
On thing that surprised me: One of my clients is starting is starting to run, and run WELL! I’ve been noticing improvement in proper foot placement, good propelling motion, accurate arm momentum and great breathing. AND… I think he may even kinda, sorta like running. I know he would never admit that though. (Cough…Tom)
One thing I repent: No time in the Word today. With seven clients, I am one tired girl. NOT an EXCUSE though! I still got my workout in. Priorities Courtney!!
One thing I liked: My trainee Paul just celebrated his one-year mark of training. He has lost exactly 20 pounds in a year. HOLY WOW. I just finished clipping his before and after pictures. OH man!! What a difference a year makes. This is one of the many reasons why I love my job so much!!!
One thing I loved: Intimacy with my husband. I’ll just leave it at that….
One thing I learned: According to Paul, “Ancient Vikings use to file their teeth to scare off their enemies.” He always shares random nonsense with me before bed. God, I love his man. His mind is like a rat maze.
One thing that surprised me: Candle lit dinner ready to eat the second I walked in the door. (Hence the intimacy) NO “hangry” problems today!
One thing I repent: Talking bad about someone that has been driving me nuts for years. UH! I constantly have to say sorry to God for this one and ask him to change my heart. AND I am even starting to pray for this person. Yuck. BUT! I’m called to love my enemies and Jesus always knows best.
One thing I liked: Belly laughs with Paul in the morning. Sometimes I have a hard time waking up and completing sentences. So, Paul likes to pick on me. Coffee is the antidote that brings me back to life.
One thing I loved: Being home before six pm. This never happens.
One thing I learned: Trauma knots. I am reading a book by Cal Dietz. Very interesting stuff! This information is helping with my back recovery and also allowing me to help my other clients who need to recover from severe or mild injuries.
One thing that surprised me: How much freaking sodium is in Kielbasa; Holy mother of Mary!
One thing I repent: Drilling my husband with interview questions, which is good, but I can be pretty intense. I just want him to be prepared, ya know?!! He’s very annoyed with me right now. He kept saying,
If I had a quarter for every time he told me to calm down….
On thing I liked: Taking a break in the middle of my workday to do a little retail therapy. I got a cute outfit for Paul’s grad party. Yay!
One thing I loved: Running outside. It is an absolutely beautiful day. It’s just me, God and worship music. There’s nothing more therapeutic. Oh wait. Shopping may be more therapeutic. I take that back.
One thing that surprised me: Jackie called me! (former client and dear friend) She left me the sweetest message. I love this woman. I am so grateful God brought her into my life. I can’t wait to see her again soon! She has a heart of gold. Everybody needs a Jackie in his or her life.
One thing I learned: LOTS about GMOS. I’m giving all my clients this packet I’ve been reading. I thought I knew a good deal, but Nooooo …
One thing I repent: Anger. Swearing up a storm over technology. I literally almost chucked my computer across the room. As I reflect on my anger, I think I do this weekly. (with technology) I really need to reel it in.
One thing I liked: My Pilates Class. There is nothing more refreshing that kicking off the weekend with the Word of God, great exercise, prayer and a room full of women I deeply love and admire. Today’s group: Sue, Jean, Annie, Jeannie, Amber AND a special guest: Allan. He got some great pics!
One thing I loved: Filming and taking professional pictures with Amber and Allen. Allen is such a joy. We had so much fun and a lot of laughs. We wrapped up our long day of shooting with cold beers and big burgers. GOD you are OH so good!
One thing I learned: The most important greens to add to your diet are: Kale, chlorella, spirulina, broccoli, wheatgrass, barley grass, matcha, alfalfa, spinach and avocados. I do know this BUT I am learning WHY they are so important. #Foodmatters
One thing that surprised me: How incredibly exhausted I am. I had great energy all day, but I am about to crash and burn.
One thing I repent: Fighting with Paul. I hate when we fight. And the worst part about our fights is that he is always trying to resolve it, but NO…I just keep going and going and going. When I use my hands to gesture with every sentence, and start waving my pointer finger like it’s a damn wand, you know it’s a bad fight. #Italianprobs. To make matters worse, it was over the #1 thing couples fight over the most: money. UH! Hate it. The good news is that we prayed, forgave one another and exchanged lots of kisses. Honestly, I have no idea where we would be without the Lord.
Life is so short. Every day should be a day of reflection on what you are blessed with, what you are learning and most importantly, where you still need to grow. The change the world so desperately needs to see always starts with you. Let God use you mightily.
Thanks for reading & God bless,
