Happiness is not the goal in life. Unfortunately, many Americans feel entitled to happiness. This mindset is merely a chasing of the wind (Ecc. 1:14) and a sweet tooth that will never be satisfied. When happiness is your main goal, the enemy has his foot in the doorway to your thought life. Your marriage eventually becomes not good enough anymore because “your partner is no longer making you happy.” You’re constantly switching jobs because every work place is not up to your standards. You gossip because that friend of yours is not quite meeting the bar you set so high. And those workouts you were initially SO excited for, suddenly become too hard and inconvenient due to your schedule being way too “busy”. And maybe you are always buying the latest trends and living outside of your means because your wardrobe is just. Never. Good. Enough.
This is a trap. It’s a lie straight from hell. And the OH SO famous, “I just want to be happy” statement is something I can’t stand.
Buck up. It’s not about you. #toughlove
True happiness/joy comes from a servant-hearted mentality. Aka: Learning from Jesus.
As followers of Christ, we know happiness comes from the world and we understand these moments are a blessing. Some of these blessings include: good food, wonderful families, deep, friendly conversations, toes in the sand, thrilling adventures and falling in love. Praise God for these moments. Even though happiness is something to bask in, it is not something to base your life around. We are promised trials and we are guaranteed tribulation. We should not be surprised when heartache comes knocking at our door. But, we also must take comfort dear friends; Christ died so we may have life and life to the full (John 10:10) and He’s the one who will strengthen us through these hard times.
JOY is where it’s at! Joy comes from the Lord and that is SO much better than happiness. God’s love (which produces joy) penetrates bone, marrow and joint to the very depths of our soul. (Hebrews 4:12) Only Jesus can do that. I promise you. However, it’s up to you to seek Him. No one can do it for you.
Whoever takes the time to read this; I pray these words from the wise Chambers sink into your heart. I pray it brings nourishment to your bones and delight to your soul. His devotional Utmost is a life-giving book. Having a relationship with your Maker is what life is all about. This is truth. Our time on earth is about picking up our swords and going to battle with the things that matter most in our life: God, family, health etc. (Eph. 6) The greatest thing the Devil ever did to deceive our nation was convince us that he doesn’t exist. Wake up! He does and it’s time to fight! Never stop fighting the good fight my friends. Everyday will be work (work with your relationships, with your health and with your faith) until the day we are called home. Are you ready to go to battle?
